Halsey Sounds Off On Her Most Recent G-Eazy Split & Why She Kept Quiet About It

Halsey wants you to focus less on her love life and more on the music that comes from it.
The Without Me singer finally spilled the tea on her second split with G-Eazy in a cover interview with Glamour, and discussed why she waited over three months before speaking about it publicly.

She explained:

“The biggest lesson I learned was to make art, not headlines. Because it can become quite easy, in the social media generation, to go from being a musician to becoming a personality.”

The 24-year-old certainly made headlines in June 2018 following her very public breakup with the rapper. As you might recall, the announcement was followed by a flurry of speculative reports and a tragic performance where the songstress broke down on stage.
So, when the couple rekindled again later in the year — only to call it quits a second time in October — Halsey took a different approach: keeping quiet and turning her experience into art. She mused:

“I call myself a collector; I collect things from people and use them to widen my artistic repertoire so that I am writing from a culmination of experiences from the world.”

The mark of a true artist!
But Halsey isn’t *just* an artist; she’s “an imitator as well” — a side of herself the songstress wasn’t always at peace with. She explained:

“I beat myself up for a long time. I was like, You’re f**king spineless. Why do you have to become everyone you’re around? Why do you have to imitate all of their interests, all of their f**king mannerisms, and their personality? Why can’t you just know who the f**k you are and be strong in that? But I realized that will never happen. So instead I started surrounding myself with people I admire and really like.”

Smart move!

No longer willing to beat herself up, the New York native is ready to reach beyond that “introspective” place creatively and focus on the bigger picture moving forward. She added:

“I’ve written a lot of inward music so far—it‘s been a reflection of me, my mental health, my experience. Then as my voice and my problems started to grow, it was like, OK, I can put this into my art. I think moving forward into this [next] record, it will be more outwardly existential, as opposed to introspective.”

And while haters are waiting to tear her down at every turn, Halsey can find solace in her relationships with other female artists — like her good pal, Ariana Grande:

“I will say one thing about my generation of artists: We are just not f**king having it. Lorde, Ariana… if you open any of our text messages at any given time, all of us are just like, ‘Yo, I love your new record. When are you leaving for tour?’ We’re so supportive.”

Sounds like these strong, supportive friendships are what helped Halsey move past her breakup and unlock her full power.
That, and drinking the blood of her exes, obviously.
But more seriously, the 24-year-old recalled attempting suicide at 17 and later being diagnosed with bipolar disorder while seeking treatment at a psychiatric hospital. She shared:

“It was a lot of things happening at once, with a complete lack of direction. Thank God I learned it then. If I hadn’t already had my meltdown, who knows when it would have happened?”

Hopefully we’ll never have to know. Halsey sounds like she’s in a much better mental health state, so stay strong, girl!
