Harry Styles Gets Honest AF About His Sexuality & Fashion Choices -- 'Who Cares?'

harry styles sexuality gender interview

Harry Styles is a surprisingly open book.

Without giving too much of himself away, the Cherry singer chatted with The Guardian about everything from his sexual identity and gender fluidity, to his boy band past, using his influence for good, and more.

Sexuality & Gender

The artist clarified he’s not hiding his sexuality:

“It’s not like I’m sitting on an answer, and protecting it, and holding it back. It’s not a case of, ‘I’m not telling you [because] I don’t want to tell you.’ It’s not, ‘Oh, this is mine and it’s not yours.'”

When pressed further on the subject, he added:

“It’s, ‘Who cares?’ Does that make sense? It’s just, ‘Who cares?'”

Well, Harry, plenty of people care!

As for claims that he has been queerbaiting in his songs or appropriating queer culture without addressing his own sexuality, Styles explained:

“Am I sprinkling in nuggets of sexual ambiguity to try and be more interesting? No.”

Fashion Choices

His fashion choices have also been a popular topic of discussion:

“In terms of how I wanna dress, and what the album sleeve’s gonna be, I tend to make decisions in terms of collaborators I want to work with. I want things to look a certain way. Not because it makes me look gay, or it makes me look straight, or it makes me look bisexual, but because I think it looks cool. And more than that, I dunno, I just think sexuality’s something that’s fun. Honestly? I can’t say I’ve given it any more thought than that.”

Mr. Styles added:

“A part of it was having, like, a big moment of self-reflection. And self-acceptance. I think it’s a very free, and freeing, time. I think people are asking, ‘Why not?’ a lot more. Which excites me. It’s not just clothes where lines have been blurred, it’s going across so many things. I think you can relate it to music, and how genres are blurring.”

For the Dunkirk star, it’s not a matter of where clothes are from, but how he feels in them:

“What women wear. What men wear. For me it’s not a question of that. If I see a nice shirt and get told, ‘But it’s for ladies.’ I think: ‘Okaaaay? Doesn’t make me want to wear it less though.’ I think the moment you feel more comfortable with yourself, it all becomes a lot easier.”

One Direction

Nearly every step of his rise to fame was documented, from his start on X-Factor to subsequent explosion with One Direction. Harry reflected on what it was like to go from a quiet life to seeing massive success:

“We didn’t get to dip in a toe. But, listen, I was a kid, all I knew was: I didn’t have to go to school any more. I thought it was f**king great. Maybe it’s something I’ll have to deal with a bit later. When I wake up in my 40s and think: Arrrggh.”

He recalled how the insane popularity he and his bandmates Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan faced, was handled:

“We were fuelling a machine. Keeping the fire going. Coming out of it, when the band stopped, I realised that the thing I’d been missing, because it was all so fast paced, was human connection.”

Dating

Like many artists (including ex Taylor Swift), he draws inspiration from his personal world, including his love life. As we previously reported, Harry included a voicemail in his new track Cherry, which seems to be a message from ex-girlfriend Camille Rowe. He explained how he handles incorporating lyrics which reference his exes:

“If a song’s about someone, is that fine? Or is that gonna get annoying for them, if people try to decipher it?”

When asked if he’s ever gotten an angry call or text from a former fling, he cheekily responded:

“Maybe ask me in a month.”

So what is dating like for him? Is there a conversation in advance with a partner about keeping things quiet? The A-lister explained:

“Uh-h-h. Like any conversation, I guess, it’s easier if you’re honest. But I try to let it come up when it comes up. Cos that’s a weird thing to talk about, y’know? If you’ve just started seeing someone, and you’re, like: [he adopts a throaty, mission-briefing voice] So! This is what’s gonna happen! I don’t wanna have that conversation, man. It would be f**king weird.”

Politics

As for using his influence for good, he elaborated on why he doesn’t direct fans and followers toward political causes more frequently:

“Because of dilution. Because I’d prefer, when I say something, for people to think I mean it. To be honest, I’m still searching for that one thing, y’know. Something I can really stand up for, and get behind, and be like: This Is My Life Fight. There’s a power to doing the one thing. You want your whole weight behind it.”
