Kristin Cavallari is opening up about what went wrong in her romance with Mark Estes!
As Perezcious readers know, the Laguna Beach alum confirmed the couple broke up after just seven months on Friday, telling Alex Cooper at her Unwell live show tour in Texas that it was a “fresh” split. Us Weekly also confirmed the breakup on the same day, but nobody had any more tea to spill… until now!

On Tuesday’s episode of Kristin’s podcast Let’s Be Honest, the reality star heartbreakingly shared why she had to end the “best” relationship she’s ever had. And as it turns out, just as fans have been concerned about all along, it had everything to do with their 13-year age gap. The Very Cavallari star shared:
“It’s hard because I broke up with Mark because I just know long-term it’s not right. It’s not because of love lost or something bad happened. No one cheated. No one was mean. No one did anything.”
She added:
“Those breakups are always the hardest I think because it’s almost easier if the guy does something that makes you hate him.”
Oof.
Kristin reiterated that the 24-year-old “didn’t do anything” wrong. They’re just in two different places in life, she explained:
“Mark has been nothing but so sweet and so supportive. He’s always been there. He’s been the best boyfriend I’ve ever had. I just know long-term he needs to experience life.”
Acknowledging the age gap, which fans had been blasting since the pair went public with the relationship in February, the 37-year-old continued:
“I started to feel the age a little bit just with life experience. I look back when I was 24 and how much life has happened for me in between. Those are crucial years. Those are formative years. This is when you find yourself. He needs to be able to do that.”
She noted that a “lot of people” will probably call her out for her delayed reaction to the age difference, but she insisted she has “always been well aware that he is 24.” She said:
“It wasn’t like I was ignoring that fact that he was younger.”
It just didn’t matter at first! If anything, it probably helped her have some of the best sex of her life! LOLz!! Realistically, though, she knows it won’t work for the long-term — and she doesn’t want to “rob” her ex of his chance to get married and have children of his own. It always comes down to the kids…
She then emotionally reflected on the whirlwind romance while saying that the breakup “isn’t a bad thing,” sharing tearfully:
“I really look at our relationship as such a beautiful relationship. Probably the best relationship of my life, quite honestly. It was very healthy and very mature. It was nothing but sweet and loving. Mark is a really good guy. And that’s what makes it hard.”
If only he was more mature, maybe they wouldn’t have to breakup at all. Aw! Suggesting the split wasn’t the Montana Boyz star’s idea, The Hills alum pointed out:
“I actually think one day he will thank me [for the breakup]. That’s just hindsight you don’t have at 24. Everything is so [focused on] right now when you’re 24.”
While it’s hard to walk away, she doesn’t “regret anything” about the romance and is “optimistic” they can be friends after some time apart, too. She noted:
“It was such a good, happy relationship. I will forever look back at Mark and I with such fond memories and pure happiness.”
Referencing her children with ex-husband Jay Cutler, Camden, 12, Jaxon, 10, and Saylor, 8, she told listeners:
“Mark is someone I would really love to have in my life in some capacity. I do care a lot about him. My kids like him.”
But she began to cry as she urged:
“He has the whole world ahead of him.”
As for her, the MTV personality said her life is “really full” with her children, work, and “a little bit of friends.” Kristin insisted she’s “really happy and really content having [her] life right now being about [her] kids and [her] work.” Dating is not something she’ll be rushing back into, either. She dished:
“[It’s] so not even on my radar right now. I have no interest in getting back into the dating world right now. I don’t know how much time I have for dating.”
That said, she has more hope that she’ll someday find the perfect person for her — and that’s all thanks to Mark! She explained:
“If Mark were 45 and had two of his own older kids, he would be perfect. I mean that. He is such a good guy, but to me it just means I’m one step closer to ultimately finding The One.”
But because he was “so close to what I want” she’s confident that the “work” she’s been putting into herself since her divorce is paying off. She expressed:
“I just think timing was off. […] My life right now is just full. The time that I do have I don’t necessarily want it going to a man right now. That’s that.”
Sad!
It sux that the timing wasn’t right, but at least she’s aware enough to realize these red flags were there from the very start! Next time, maybe she’ll be more cautious when deciding who to give her heart to, ya know? But hey, at least things didn’t end in disaster and betrayal!! It might’ve been easier to walk away that way, but it would have hurt like hell!
