It doesn’t seem like anyone saw Liam Payne‘s death coming… except maybe himself??
The One Direction star’s ex Maya Henry has been vocal recently, claiming Liam had been harassing her in the months since they broke up. She said on TikTok that he would message her and even her mom, sometimes creating new iCloud accounts to get to her. She said in one viral video:
“Is this normal behavior to you?”
On Monday it was reported she hired lawyers — as she was taking legal action against the singer, starting with a cease and desist.

The situation was apparently more concerning than just what she said in her videos. It’s not just that he called her, it’s what he was saying. Maya described the behavior as abusive, saying in an interview on a podcast called The Internet Is Dead on Monday that he was calling her up “so that I could continue to feel bad for him.” She explained:
“He would always message me ever since we broke up, like ‘Oh, I’m not well.’ He would always play with death and be like, ‘Well, I’m gonna die. I’m not doing well.'”
OMG. She said he would tell her mother the same upsetting things when he reached out to her:
“He would text my mom, ‘I’m not doing well, have Maya contact me.’ Because I wouldn’t respond. And it’s just always the same cycle.”
She says as recently as when she announced her book in February of this year, he “did the same thing”:
“He called my mom, ‘I think I’m not going to be around much longer.'”
She told the hosts she would always help even though she didn’t want to get back together with him, offering to help him get back into rehab. But ultimately she “felt like it was a manipulation”:
“As of recent events that have happened, I can’t speak on legally. It’s just gotten so much worse… but I always just felt really bad.”
Wow. We have no idea what she means by “worse.” In light of Wednesday’s tragedy, we have to wonder if she meant more clear, explicit threats of self-harm. Again, we don’t yet know all the details of Liam’s death, just that he fell from a 3rd floor balcony of his hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. And in the past, of course, he openly spoke about his struggles with suicidal ideation.
But for Maya, this was over and over — and felt like it was meant “to traumatize” her:
“He would always just say, ‘I’m so sorry for everything I’ve done, I can’t live with myself’ — but then is continuing to like, try and traumatize me. And so I always just felt like it was a whole manipulation to maybe keep me from not saying anything or keep me on his good side in a way.”
Wow. This is disturbing stuff, made even more haunting by his death. It seems Maya certainly didn’t expect anything to actually happen to her ex.

We still don’t know if the fall was intentional or not, but it’s important to note that no matter what happened, it would NOT be Maya’s fault.
