We’re still struggling to come to grips with the sudden and shocking death of Liam Payne. And this resurfaced interview just completely shatters the already broken pieces of our heart.
TMZ reported on Wednesday that the One Direction alum died after a fall from his hotel balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina. As of now, it’s not clear if the tragedy was an accident or possibly something else… But an interview he gave three years ago is sending chills amid the unbelievable news.

In 2021, Liam opened up on the Diary of a CEO podcast about struggling with mental health and “severe” suicidal ideation during his 1D days. He reflected in the interview:
“There were a few pictures of me on a boat and I was all bloated out and I call it my pills-and-booze face. My face was 10 times bigger than it is now. The problem was, the best way to secure us was to lock us in our rooms, and what is in the room? A mini-bar. So I had a party-for-one that seemed to carry on for years. It was wild but the only way you could get frustration out.”
Asked by host Steven Bartlett if the excessive substance abuse led him to suffer from suicidal thoughts, the Strip That Down singer eerily responded:
“Yeah. There is definitely some stuff I have never spoken about to do with it. It was really, really severe.”
Hear him talk about it (below):
So incredibly heartbreaking.
Prior to that, Liam suffered a mental health crisis in 2019 which he revealed on Straight Talking with Ant Middleton he was “quite lucky to be here still” after coming out the other end of. He explained:
“There’s times where that level of loneliness and people getting into you every day every so often… it’s like, ‘When will this end?’ that’s almost nearly killed me a couple of times.”
And when asked if he ever thought about acting on his thoughts, he heartbreakingly responded:
“Yeah, when I’ve been in a bad place. It’s 100%, you know. There’s no point denying it — it’s definitely been on the menu a couple of times in my life. Luckily I had great people around me. When things start to pile up on you it can get you, and you can only control you. You have to get on with it.”
This is all just so tragic. We want to reiterate that as of now, it’s not known what caused Liam’s fall. But what’s clear is he struggled with a lot of demons… or at the very least has in the past.
Rest in peace.
