On Friday, Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus dropped the vid for their hit song, and it is INSANE! 1800s Western meets modern day!

Of course, the 20-year-old rapper’s ascent to stardom has not been easy.
The Atlanta-native initially released the track independently on December 3, 2018, where it gained popularity on the social video sharing app TikTok.
In March 2019, the song simultaneously reached the Billboard Hot 100, Hot Country Songs, and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts.
Unfortunately, Billboard removed the tune from its Hot Country chart for “not [embracing] enough elements of today’s country music”
They told Rolling Stone:
“Upon further review, it was determined that Old Town Road by Lil Nas X does not currently merit inclusion on Billboard‘s country charts. When determining genres, a few factors are examined, but first and foremost is musical composition. While Old Town Road incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.”
Amid accusations of racism, a spokesperson for the publication told Genius:
“Billboard’s decision to take the song off of the country chart had absolutely nothing to do with the race of the artist.”
However, Lil Nas X got the last laugh when he teamed up with Miley Cyrus‘s country superstar dad for a BANGIN’ remix!
Though the song was not re-entered onto the country charts, both the original version and the remix eventually reached number one on the Hot 100.
The Achy Breaky Heart crooner said in a statement:
“I loved the song the first time I heard it. Country music fans decide what they like. Not critics or anyone else… Waylon Jennings once told me every once in a while the industry outlaws someone because they’re different. Country music fans don’t need to be defined by critics. I’ve always said, don’t think inside the box, don’t think outside the box. Think like there is no box. So, I’m honored to collaborate with Lil Nas X on Old Town Road.”
The tune has not only been embraced by both hip-hop and country fans, it has been revered by reality TV royalty!
