Matt Damon has always been Ben Affleck’s bestie, but that doesn’t mean he necessarily approves of all his actions… Especially when it comes to his divorce from Jennifer Lopez!
As Ben and Jen’s divorce continues to roll out, a source is claiming The Bourne Identity star is less than enthused over his BFF’s treatment of the pop singer — especially after he connected with her at the Toronto International Film Festival. On Friday, the source told In Touch:
“J.Lo has been confiding a lot in Matt, not just in Toronto but during recent weeks as well. She’s found him to be a calming influence and is hopeful their friendship will last beyond the marriage, plus she’d like to work with him down the line, too.”
As we all saw earlier this month, the Jenny from the Block singer had a one-on-one convo with Matt while promoting her new movie Unstoppable, which both Matt and Ben produced. An insider at the time told DailyMail.com that Matt shut down any conversation about Ben during their rendezvous. But just because he didn’t want to openly talk about his bestie doesn’t mean he doesn’t have thoughts! The source went on to tell In Touch:
“It’s been very difficult for Matt to sit by and condone or even forgive Ben’s behavior, which he finds cruel and totally unwarranted.”
Wow! Those are strong words to be throwing around! The source continued:
“He’s not trying to butt in for the sake of it and can see very well that life with J.Lo was likely a challenge, but not to a point where she deserved to be humiliated and degraded. Matt’s big on manners. His wife, Luciana [Barroso], also agrees that Ben’s handled this situation with a serious lack of empathy or class. And they’ve not been shy letting him know that.”

Oof! We’re sure Ben doesn’t like to hear that… A source previously told the outlet he’s “not taking it well at all,” and for Matt “to even suggest that he was somehow at fault really rubs him the wrong way. He says if Matt, or anyone, were in his shoes they would have run from that marriage ten times faster.” Yikes! But that’s what real friends are for, right?? To support you no matter what — even if that means calling out some icky behavior. And according to another source, the Justice League star feels pretty guilty about everything that’s gone down. They told the outlet:
“Ben may come across looking all happy and cheery. And he is, for the most part, but he certainly has his down moments. As much as he was relieved to escape this marriage, the divorce has still taken a toll on him. His reputation has taken a huge hit and he’s grappling with a lot of guilt.”
That’s certainly new to hear! Especially amid those reports Ben is “happy to be free” from his relationship with J.Lo. But he’s apparently trying to keep a level head by “throwing himself into work” as a “healthy escape.” According to the source, though, “there’s always a worry that he’ll turn back to his vices when the going gets tough.” And that’s why his ex-wife Jennifer Garner has put together what the source calls a “mercy squad,” which includes Matt, to keep an eye on the A-lister. The source dished:
“That’s the main reason you’re seeing Jen going over there nearly every day to make sure he’s okay. His mother, his brother and his close friends, like Matt Damon, are helping out too. They’re all in touch with him and with each other. They’re very much a team and acting as a de facto support group for him. If they’re seeing a thing to worry about, they alert each other immediately. Ben knows they’re all in touch, but he doesn’t know the extent of it.”
