Well, this is quite a shift!
In a new cover story with People out on Monday, Meghan Markle revealed she’s a BIG fan of being a Sussex now — despite all her turmoil with the royal family! Wow!
The Suits alum and her husband Prince Harry were given the name Sussex on their 2018 wedding day by Queen Elizabeth II, years before their dramatic royal exit.

Despite their rocky past, the activist acknowledged the last name now holds a really special place in her heart — in a way she never expected until she had her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. She explained:
“It’s our shared name as a family, and I guess I hadn’t recognized how meaningful that would be to me until we had children. I love that that is something that Archie, Lili, H and I all have together. It means a lot to me.”
She noted that the moniker “is part of our love story.” So sweet!
By the way, Harry and Meghan doubled down on this surname last year when they switched their children’s last name from Mountbatten-Windsor to Sussex when describing them on the royal family’s website. This was just around the time they debuted their own Sussex.com website, too. A source told The Times:
“The reality behind the new site is very simple — it’s a hub for the work the Sussexes do and it reflects the fact the family have, since the King’s coronation, the same surname for the first time. That’s a big deal for any family. It represents their unification and it’s a proud moment.”
It’s definitely a nice thing — but not always how they felt!
As Perezcious readers know, Harry and Meghan walked away from their royal ties in 2020. At the time, a source told DailyMail.com that “Meghan felt she had to escape because living within the royal confines was soul crushing.” Oof! She then sat down with Oprah Winfrey to share her truth, noting that she felt unprotected by The Firm and the new royal lifestyle took a toll on her mental health, leading to suicidal thoughts. It was a really dark time for the couple. Because of that, they wanted nothing to do with their past!
For a time being after the exit, they ditched the royal monikers, preferring to just go by their first names. Lately, they’ve been leaning into the royal ties more and more, though. And now it’s clear Meg has no intention of changing that, either!
Is this really just because it connects her whole family? Or does she like the royal brand? Hmm. Sound OFF (below), Perezcious readers!
