Nick Lachey is opening up about how his split from Jessica Simpson STILL impacts him!
On Wednesday’s premiere episode of season 3 of Netflix‘s The Ultimatum, the singer referenced his breakup while speaking directly to a contestant who had been divorced. In a rare comment about his ex, he expressed:
“I, too, was previously married, divorced, so I understand the hurt, the scars that exist from that.”
Oof. The pair got married in 2002 but broke up in 2005 (before finalizing their split the next year). This relationship really left an impression if he still has “scars” all these years later!

The singer then encouraged the contestant to not let former relationships get in the way of new ones, urging:
“Don’t let your past define your future.”
Great advice!
Later, the 98 Degrees star got candid about how moving forward from his breakup led him to something better — AKA his wife Vanessa Lachey and their kids Camden, 12, Brooklyn, 9, and Phoenix, 7. He gushed:
“What I truly always wanted in my life, which was to have a beautiful marriage and a beautiful family, if I hadn’t retained my belief in that, I wouldn’t have ever realized the beautiful life I have with this woman.”
Aw!
We bet Jessica’s not gonna be happy about this take, though — especially not now that she’s seemingly going through another breakup!
In her 2020 memoir Open Book, the fashion designer noted how hurtful it was to see Nick begin dating the NCIS: Hawai’i actress before they’d even finalized their split. A 2021 paperback version included heartbreaking diary entries, in which she wrote:
“So, Nick, you’re with another already? Seems that you forgot the love you spoke to me. I’m saddened beyond belief. Alone in the dark, with no one to call my own.”
So sad!
These days, Jessica and her husband Eric Johnson are “living separately” amid divorce speculation, per Us Weekly. So, things aren’t going so well for her. That must make this sting even more!
As for Vanessa, she previously shared how difficult it was to date Nick as he was going through the divorce, saying in an April 2022 episode of the reality series:
“He was literally in a very public marriage and a very public divorce, and I had to go through all that s**t very publicly and it was very hard for us. It wasn’t until the moment that he was like, ‘I’m gonna let it go,’ and I said, ‘I’m gonna let it go,’ and we truly committed to each other. We literally fell deeper and harder than we ever could.”
