Paul Mescal is transporting Oz to ancient Rome!
In the latest installment of Saturday Night Live, the Irish actor took up hosting duties… And hilariously reimagined his blockbuster hit Gladiator II as a Wicked-inspired musical! Ha! In a mock trailer for the sword-and-sandal flick, a narrator says:
“Gladiator II was a hit earning over $300 million worldwide… But then we saw the massive success of Moana 2 and Wicked, so after some rushed reshoots, Gladiator II is now a musical.”
In one song, Kenan Thompson sings “there’s no place like Rome” in a hysterical take on of The Wizard of Oz’s classic “there’s no place like home.” LOLz! And at the end of the sketch, Paul is seen flying away from the Colosseum on a broomstick wearing a Wicked Witch of the West hat while singing “There’s no place like Rome” — but to the melody of Cynthia Erivo’s iconic Defying Gravity battle cry. HA! Why choose between Gladiator II and Wicked when you can have Glicked?!
Later in the episode, the SNL cast welcomed surprise guest Trisha Paytas in a hilarious sketch about Paul’s top artists on his Spotify Wrapped. You can ch-ch-check it out (below):
And if you didn’t get enough singing between those two sketches, Shaboozey was the featured musical guest for this week’s episode, singing Good News and A Bar Song (Tipsy). Watch (below):
Fantastic! You can catch up on the rest of the sketches (below):
