Princess Catherine Skips Royal Event At Last Minute -- How She's Navigating Getting Back To Work After Cancer

Princess Catherine Is 'Listening To Her Body' While Getting Back To Work After Cancer

Princess Catherine is taking everything one day at a time.

Kate Middleton was expected to make her first appearance at Royal Ascot in two years on Wednesday — but at the very last minute — literally the day of — she canceled! Should we be concerned??

The 43-year-old announced she went into remission after a battle with an undisclosed form of cancer in January. Since then, she’s started to reemerge, including at Saturday’s big Trooping the Colour event. On Monday, she also attended the annual Order of the Garter service at Windsor Castle. She’s been busy! Fans were obviously looking forward to seeing her at the famous horse races, but her absence shouldn’t come across as alarming — at least according to these insiders!

Queen Elizabeth II’s former spokeswoman Ailsa Anderson told People on Wednesday that this is just a clear sign the mother of three is doing what is best for her:

“She’s being sensible, listening to what her body is telling her and easing back into public life.”

Buckingham Palace has said the same. When announcing she would return to public duties, they stressed it would be at her own pace. While attending Royal Ascot is an informal tradition for many family members, it is not considered a ceremonial commitment on the royal calendar. Seems like she prioritized the more important events earlier in the week and then opted to back out of this social gathering. Understandable!

Prince William attended the horse races without Kate to present the trophy to the winner of the Prince of Wales Stakes. He rode in the first carriage of the Royal Procession with King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and Prince Saud bin Khalid Al-Saud of Saudi Arabia. Per the outlet, those nearby noticed the seating arrangements for the procession were switched at the last minute, just around when it was confirmed the Princess of Wales would not be coming.

While Kate is apparently bummed she had to miss out on the fun, she’s said to be focusing on finding the right balance with work as she returns to the spotlight.

This marks what will likely become a trend for her over the summer and beyond as she prioritizes her recovery and determines her schedule on a case-by-case basis. After she and her husband gave themselves the space they needed to focus on health and family last year, they will continue to establish any necessary boundaries for a good work-life balance. A friend expressed:

“They were able to step back and reassess their priorities in all aspects of their lives.”

Meanwhile, a source close to the royal household added:

“She has not been able to have the privacy that a person who faces this kind of illness is normally afforded.”

That makes recovery even harder! A cancer battle is no joke — especially not when doing it under such scrutiny and amid so many conspiracy theories. Putting her health first and not overdoing it sounds like a smart plan!
