Mere hours ago, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made their boldest move yet.
While their choice wasn’t entirely shocking given all they’ve endured over the past year, fellow senior members of the royal family were reportedly given no notice about Wednesday’s announcement.

The office of Queen Elizabeth II hit back soon after with a statement (below) of their own, suggesting they were not consulted before the big unveiling, per royal reporter Richard Palmer:
“Discussions with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through.”
Shortly before Meg and Harry’s big news, @theroyalfamily social media accounts shared images from the couple’s visit on Tuesday to Canada House, which was their first royal engagement after time away during the holidays. If Buckingham Palace had been in the know about the timing, you’d think they would have prepared a different post or an official statement…
It seems likely that could be the case, especially after new reports came in from BBC royal correspondent Jonny Dymond, who shared on Twitter:
“BREAKING. BBC Understands that no other member of the Royal Family was consulted before Harry and Meghan issued their personal statement tonight, the Palace is understood to be ‘disappointed’.”
“BREAKING A palace source tells the BBC that senior members of the Royal family feel “hurt” by the announcement that Harry and Meghan are to withdraw from their current Royal roles. The source confirmed that no members of the royal family were consulted.”
It seems unlikely that we would get a dedicated post from Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s social media accounts about the fractured family, but then again everyone is proving to be a wildcard right now! We’ll just have to wait and see…
Clearly, there’s a lot up in the air right now, so the Duke and Duchess of Sussex did their best to field questions about the uncharted “working model” which they will be entering this year. Specifically discussing finances and money moves, the pair wrote in part:
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex take great pride in their work and are committed to continuing their charitable endeavours as well as establishing new ones. In addition, they value the ability to earn a professional income, which in the current structure they are prohibited from doing.”
