Is Selena Gomez's Boyfriend Music Video An Answer To The Weeknd?!

Selena Gomez Boyfriend Music Video The Weeknd Easter Eggs

Selena Gomez is back, baby! And she’s ready for new Boyfriend!

The former Disney star is recalling her Wizards of Waverly Place past in her magical new music video — and it’s also an apparently not-so-subtle shoutout to her ex.

No, not that one. We’re talking about The Weeknd!

Selly dropped new music on Thursday, with the deluxe version of Rare featuring three new tracks: SheSouvenir, and Boyfriend.

Fans already figured the songs were about her second most famous ex, Abel Tesfaye, aka I Can’t Feel My Face singer The Weeknd. But the music video for Boyfriend kind of closes the case!

OK, first off, just watch and enjoy Selena being a badass!

Did you pick up on the nods to The Weeknd?

Well, first there’s the driving. Fans of both artists couldn’t help but notice the shots of Selena driving were awfully close to the ones Abel used in his video for Blinding Lights. But then again, how many ways can you show someone driving, right? But Selena didn’t have to show herself driving all through the hills…

We don’t know, you decide on that one.

Much more obviously we had all those frogs!

In Boyfriend, Selena inverts the Frog Prince fairy tale by magically turning all her “princes” into frogs. It’s also a nice metaphor for breaking up with BFs that don’t work out. They all turn into little frogs in the cage of your mind, right? Deep.

Anyhoo, that may also have been an answer to The Weeknd.

See, in his video for Heartless, in which he continues his drug-fueled Fear And Loathing odyssey in Las Vegas and finds a frog himself. Only, he doesn’t exactly kiss it… instead he gives it a big lick for its hallucinogenic properties. Ew.

Coincidence? Maaaaaaaybe.

We mean, the frogs are used in a completely different way. But what are the odds they would just happen to both get into amphibian symbolism for their vids??

Heartless came out in December, giving Selena plenty of time to have picked the concept for Boyfriend in response.

What do YOU think, Perezcious music critics? Is it all about The Weeknd or what??
