Selena Gomez has spoken so candidly about her mental health over the years. Now she’s doing it again.
World Mental Health Day came and went late last week, observed by people all over the globe who are concerned about their emotional and psychological well-being. But now in their wake, Selena is speaking up again, too. Remember, the 32-year-old pop superstar was present at her company Wondermind‘s Mental Fitness Summit. During that event, as we’ve covered, the singer spoke very plainly about some of the mental health challenges she’s been dealing with recently.

But there’s so much more. Most notably, the Lose You To Love Me singer revealed that nighttime has become so rough for her that she no longer sleeps in her own bedroom!
OMG!
Explaining how being alone in her bedroom at night has come to be associated with “a really dark time” in her life and the associated anxiety and malaise that comes with it, the singer revealed:
“I actually don’t even sleep in my bedroom anymore, because I associate it with such a really dark time. I am a very anxious person. It’s kind of like doomsday, and I think having a positive conversation with yourself, even if that sounds weird, it’s really impactful.”
Wow.
That seems so intense. But also, there’s some critical backstory to fill in here, too. Back in 2022, Gomez released the documentary My Mind & Me. In it, she revealed that she’d been diagnosed with psychosis and bipolar depression. During the doc, she explained how her bed became a spot that she felt like she didn’t want to leave “for years” while she was struggling with those conditions at their worst:
“I didn’t want to leave my bed for years, and part of it was I wasn’t doing the work. And you have to believe in yourself to do the work that will truly enlighten you a little bit.”
So maybe it’s no wonder she now associates her bedroom with such tough times, ya know? She’s been through so much with mental health battles.
And the battles are continuing in other ways, too. Gomez also revealed during the summit that getting attention from fans can be really draining. She’s learned to cope with that by focusing on the positives — which, in the case of adoring fans, centers on how much her music and television output has meant to them. She explained:
“Like before I step out of the car, and there’s going to be lots of noises and stuff — if that’s the case, I’m not saying that’s every day — but I have to breathe, and I have to say, ‘all of this is a gift, and I may not be in the mood for this, [but] every time I see someone and end up making them smile, [it] always just makes my day no matter how I’m feeling.”
Focus on the positives! A good lesson for us all!
And one of the positives, BTW, is Selena’s momma Mandy Teefey. To wrap the summit on a high note, the pop princess explained that she very often reminds herself of the lessons her mom (and her Wondermind co-founder, no less!) has taught her:
“You know, my mom has always taught me that the noise is going to be there constantly, but it’s about finding that moment where I actually physically say, ‘no, I am a good person, I’m kind, I work really hard, and I’m grateful, and I love all the little things in life,’ and I need that reminder.”
We love that. And we ALL need that reminder from time to time. Sending love and light to Selena!!
