Spielberg's Glee-esque Series Picked Up By NBC!

If we were Ryan Murphy and the crew over at Glee … we wouldn’t sweat this news at all!

Here’s the sitch:

NBC is starting to announce their fall lineup of new shows and one of the first pilots to get a greenlight is Steven Spielberg’s musical drama Smash. It follows a group of characters, played by Debra Messing, Katharine McPhee, Jack Davenport and Anjelica Huston, as they come together to put on a Broadway musical.

Obviously, there is the glaring similarity that this is a TV musical drama, as is Glee, but beyond that, we don’t see them really in competition. Glee’s niche is cover songs and their audience’s a younger demographic. We see Steven’s show appealing to an older sect and we’d surely bet on the fact that all of their music will be original; Steve’s just that kind of guy.

Regardless, we’re happy about the news either way. We’re all for more musical television, so long as the music is GOOD!

In other news, NBC has also picked up some other shows: Prime Suspect, a series adaption of the acclaimed Brit miniseries and a comedy starring Whitney Cummings. However, we’re still waiting on the fate of Wonder Woman, but we imagine it won’t be long before it gets the go. All the buzz its generating – they would be crazy not to put it to air!
