How Happy Is The Happy Meal?

How Happy Is The Happy Meal?

Happy Meal accounts for 10% of U.S. sales at McDonalds

McDonald├óΓé¼Γäós staple children’s meal that comes in a box with a sweet toy inside has come under some major criticism lately.

San Francisco banned the product, passing new nutritional guidelines to keep it’s toy from disappearing, while a 6 month old hamburger miraculously didn├óΓé¼Γäót grow mold or decompose, but all that aside, how much money does this little boxed meal make for the fast food joint?

The short answer is only about 10% of sales, which doesn’t seem like an overwhelming figure until you realize that McDonald’s raked in $30.9 billion in 2009!

We aren’t mathmaticians and we certainly aren’t going to pick up a calculater, but that means the Happy Meal makes over $3 billion for the fast food mega chain.

Darren Tristano, exec VP at Technomic, puts the number in perspective for us, saying:

├óΓé¼┼ôThat would be more than Panera Bread, IHOP or Dairy Queen chains sold individually in the U.S. in 2009.”

Wow! That truly is one happy meal!

If the ban on the Happy Meal goes nationwide, they could open a brand new franchise with that kind of buck and call it “Happy Meals”!
