Cancer Stricken Roger Ebert Physically Attacked by NY Post Critic!

Some crazy shiz went down at Danny "Trainspotting" Boyle's Toronto screening for his new flick, Slumdog Millionaire, this week.
According to the NY Daily News, beloved 'thumbs up' critic Roger Ebert was physically attacked by a fellow critic.
Here's what went down:
Soon after the lights went down, a source tells us, "a man in the audience started yelling, 'Don't touch me!' People looked around and shrugged. Ten minutes later, the voice yells again, 'I said don't touch me!'"
Again, people shrugged off the disturbance. But a few minutes later, says our source, "the guy stands up in the darkness and thwacks the guy behind him with a big festival binder. He hit him so hard everybody could hear it. Everyone freaked out and turned around."
The thwacker? New York Post film critic Lou Lumenick.
The thwackee? Esteemed Chicago Sun-Times film critic Roger Ebert.
After battling thyroid and salivary gland cancer for years, Ebert, 66, can no longer speak.
"Apparently, Roger was just trying to tap Lumenick on the shoulder to signal him that he couldn't see the movie," surmises our source. "He was trying to ask him to move over a bit."
Though Lumenick seemed surprised to see whom he had struck, he offered no apology, according to another source.
Appalling!!

Ebert was a trouper, though. He stayed to watch the film and supposedly even wrote a little note to Boyle saying he'll probably get an Oscar nod.
Lesson learned: take a deep breath, assess and think before you act, right?!

I can't believe that Ebert didn't have a translator/buffer handy…or, even a pen and pad of paper handy to pass a note to his 'screen blocker'.
I have never cared for Ebert, and it would not surprise me that he provoked this 'verbal attack', so as to gain sympathy or to discredit his NY Post adversary.
Before anyone asks, or makes implications that I just don't symathize with handicapped individuals…..I grew up in Chicago with Ebert. He's an ass, and he knew what he was doing.
BTW…this was a movie theater, right? How many movie theaters have any of you been to, where the paid ticket holders couldn't get up and change seats (especially, if the person in front of them was blocking their view)?
And, considering that theaters are 'stadium seating', Lumenick would have to be, in excess of, 6'5", for Ebert to to have been able to see the FULL screen.

It's the film festival, there are no empty seats to move to. my folks have been at movies all week and the theatres are sold out.
And it was held at Ryerson Theatre not a multiplex. Ryerson Theatre doesn't have stadium seating as it's not a multiplex chain. It's a theatre used for stage productions, concerts and the like and I know I haven't always been able to see around those in front of me there.

Re: ralphie – Thank you, Ralphie. I appreciate your insight. I always assumed that films were shown in theaters with stadium seating, nowadays (I now reside in a town with one movie theater, 2 screens, and all of the seats recline and rock…so, I am spoiled, I guess. lol )
I am not overly tall (5'5"), and I frequently went to the theaters in my home town (Chicago)..and, I NEVER had to ask a person to move, shift or 'cower down', so that I could see the screen.
But, I thank you for for treating my previous response with respect and courtesy…rather than disrespect, name-calling and cussing.
Roger Ebert is one of the few movie critics who's criticism is usually insightful and informative. He enjoys movie stars without adoring them beyond logic or being overly snarky when they disappoint. It is absolutely disgusting that he was hit by anyone. Especially by another critic. That the man has fought for his life in recent years, and it is appalling he should be hit at a movie of all things. A lot of critics owe Ebert a debt of gratitude for making movie criticism as viable as it is today.
That's just wrong!! I love Roger and wish him all the best in his cancer fight

I totally disapprove this type of behavior, but some people are really nuts when it comes to other people touching them. I have seen people flip like lunatics when they are touched!!!! Was Ebert sitting alone? Maybe if someone would have said something to the jerk in front of him this could have been avoided.

Damn, I don't think I would recognize Roger in a dark movie theater. If the critic didn't know who was sitting behind him, he must have thought that it was a creepy guy. But if he knew, I mean, is Roger and he lives for the pleasure of seeing movies. I don't think he would arrive late. In any case whether he knew or not, the critic was attending a exclusive event. Thats not a cool way to behave. He should have know better. Besides, people who talks during the movies or intentionally raises their shoulders are annoying as hell and should be sent to jail anyway, plus hitting a poor old man with cancer, he should be in jail for life.
