MTV has just announced their host for this year's MTV Europe Music Awards. And that responsibility, for the second time in a row, goes to Katy Perry! MTV execs were pleased with Perry's performance last year in Liverpool, so they've asked her back once again. This also marks the first time MTV's ever asked someone to host two consecutive EMAs. Congrats! This year's award show will take place in Berlin on November 5th. Performers include Green Day, Leona Lewis. We think Sliimy would make a great addition to that list. Can't wait to watch! What a concept! MTV driving actual music sales! While the public's reaction to Kanye West's behavior during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech seems to be the most talked about stunt at this years VMAs, the music itself is also receiving some recognition. All of the performers at the awards show are seeing a HUGE increase in their music sales including Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Green Day, Jay-Z, Pink and of course Taylor Swift, who's iTunes sales went up 80%! Popular British band and Twilight soundtrack standard Muse also performed for the first time on American television and the sale of their album skyrocketed as a result of the VMAs. Everyone really did put in top-notch performances that night even if other events may have overshadowed them! The numbers are in! The past 12 months have treated many artists in the music industry extreeeemely well, while others haven't had quite the same luck with their new releases. So who came out on top??? The biggest albums of the year sales-wise appear to be Taylor Swift's Fearless (3.7 million copies sold), Michael Jackson's #1's (3 million!!), Beyonce's I Am… Sasha Fierce (2.4 million) and rounding out the bunch is the ever-popular Twilight soundtrack, which sold a massive 2.2 million copies. Honorable mentions? Check out the list:
This year has seen its fair share of bombs as well! Not everyone can do well! The Jonas Brothers fever must be cooling, because the boys only managed to sell 520,000 copies of their new album! Disney darling Demi Lovato also bombed big time, pushing only 240,000 copies of Here We Go Again. Other losers include Jordin Sparks (105,000 copies), Green Day (750,000 units) and Miz Kelly Clarkson, who sold 675,000 copies of her new album. Do U agree with the numbers???? If you haven't gotten Green Day's new album, 21st Century Breakdown, go get it - but don't expect to get it at the everyday low prices of Wal-Mart. You won't find it! The band refuses to let the superstore distribute the album because they were asked to provide a censored version. Frontman Billie Joe Armstrong reveals in an interview: "They want artists to censor their records in order to be carried in there. We just said no. We've never done it before. You feel like you're in 1953 or something." The company has a long-standing policy not to stock any CD with a parental advisory sticker, but the guys aren't too concerned with it. They are just pleased with the music and will stand behind it, no matter who sells it. Guitarist Mike Dirnt said: "As the biggest record store in the America, they should probably have an obligation to sell people the correct art." Damn straight! It seems pretty foolish to lose business over something that could and should be just moderated. How hard is it to ask for ID before selling a kid something considered 'adult content'? It's really not, lazy bastards. Your loss! [Image via WENN.] Permalink / 113 comments (RSS) / Forward this post » Green Day To Top The Charts
Who knew that Green Day would experience this sort of longevity? It looks like their next album, 21st Century Breakdown, is headed for the top of the charts once it is released this Friday. Even with less on-sale days than most albums (most new music is released on Tuesday), it is likely to come out on top. According to sources, 650,000 copies of the album have been shipped to retailers. Good luck, boys! Permalink / 43 comments (RSS) / Forward this post » |
