Kat Von D Gets Backlash Over New Eyeliner Name -- And Hits Back With A Rant Of Her Own!

Last month, Kat Von D released a new eyeliner called “Basket Case.”
No one said boo about the beauty product at the time, but now the liner — named for the Green Day song and even featuring Billie Joe Armstrong in the advertising — is getting the wrong kind of attention.

An Instagram user calling herself Holly Quinn laid out a case against Kat as making light of mental health issues and specifically exploiting the images of Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen, punk idols who infamously suffered from mental illness — and died violently in their early twenties.
The punk fan’s message was clearly enough to raise Kat’s hackles, as she commented on the post (below):

*Rant* Okay this is everything I have to say about this, and since no one cares about severe mental illness and punk history let me give it to you. Capitalizing on the severely mentally ill is morally wrong and no one has said anything about this. Sid and Nancy were THE punk icons, but they were also both severely mentally ill. Nancy had paranoid schizophrenia, and it was thought Sid viscous stabbed her to death, before the trial Sid killed himself. You both took something from the truly mentally ill @katvondbeauty @greenday. Why would you take this imagery and not donate the proceeds to mental health research? ESP when you BOTH have been to rehab. It├óΓé¼Γäós sick to take something from two dead people that were iconically mentally ill. Sid and Nancy shouldn├óΓé¼Γäót have been used like that. This is a disgrace to punk, it├óΓé¼Γäós mean- and I don├óΓé¼Γäót get it. Mental illness is at a all time high and you both are using it for a fashion statement & and to sell a fucking eyeliner! You took from my community- you took something sacred, and then used it to sell a eyeliner called #basketcase !!! Basketcase ├░┼╕┬ñ┬« is another word for insanity!!! I get it it├óΓé¼Γäós also a song of his but really guys?!? This is in such poor taste I can├óΓé¼Γäót! No proceeds going to schizophrenia research?! Or even addiction research?!? When you both are former addicts?!? Okay you both are hypocrites and part of the problem. You both are the worst kind of human, taking from the mentally ill?! That├óΓé¼Γäós a new low @thekatvond … please stop taking things and then never being apart of the change. The proceeds for this should have been given to mental illness research- Period! I hope other people speak out against this! Because it├óΓé¼Γäós the meanest thing you can do to people that were mentally ill. I├óΓé¼Γäóm really disappointed in you Kat. #katvond #sidvicious #sexpistols #stigma #basketcaseeyeliner #bipolardisorder #punk #punksnotdead #mentalhealth #schizophrenia #paranoidschizophrenic #nancyspungen #punkstyle #addict #addiction #greenday #billyjoelarmstrong #standup #bassistA post shared by Holly Quinn (@punksnotpretty) on Feb 1, 2018 at 4:24pm PST

Kat clearly was upset by the criticism, as she wrote multiple comments, going an eye for an eyeliner by responding to every individual point:

The comments following seemed to be mixed, but we can’t help but think far fewer people would have seen this post if Kat hadn’t jumped in…
Eesh. Gurl, you cannot let folks on the Internet get you riled up like this! People gonna have their opinions!
What do YOU think of this war of words??
