Phelps' Subway Sponsorship Up In Smoke

Filed under: Drugs > Zportz > Michael Phelps

Fast food stoner fave, Subway, is pulling the plug on Michael Phelps' sponsorship deal with the sandwich artists.

Although Subway hasn't released an official statement, the big wigs over at Subway HQ aren't too pleased with the Olympic swimmer. It's being reported that "execs are pissed off, talking to legal, want their endorsement money returned — and to 'get rid of this embarrassment."

All mentions of Phelps have been erased from the company's website!

Way to harsh Michael's mellow, Subway.

Guess he won't be seeing anymore complimentary meatball subs in the future!

Phelps' Coach Speaks!

Filed under: Zportz > Michael Phelps

wenn-phelps.jpg

We guess they felt that Green Golden Boy Michael Phelps was getting off too easily, because he's finally feeling some fallout from the bong photos. He's been suspended by USA Swimming for the next 3 months and he's lost his Kelloggs endorsement.

But, many of Phelps' teammates and colleagues have come to the 23-year-old's defense.

His coach Bob Bowman iis now says, "Michael’s been through a lot and he’s learned a lot, hopefully. I support him and I want to see him do better. I’m here, as always, to try to help him move forward. He’s learned some tough lessons and he’s disappointed a lot of people, me included."

41-year-old silver medalist, Dara Torres, whom Phelps jokingly nicknamed "Mom," says, "I see him as a kid trying to grow up in the most intense spotlight known to any athlete. He has apologized and what else can he do?. The thing I hope is that people realize Michael is still a person and not just a swimming hero," adding, "He didn’t let the USA down at the games, so we shouldn’t let him down."

Fellow swimmer Amanda Beard, who received criticism after posing nude in Playboy, was a little more direct, saying, "If anyone knows public scrutiny, it’s me. When I posed for Playboy, so many officials looked down on me. Michael knows he isn’t a bad person. He made a mistake. People need to get over it. I want to cheer him on in London."

And rival agent Evan Morgenstein seemed to sum up the majority's opinion, saying, "Enough is enough. The penalty is far greater than the crime. He has said he is sorry. Let’s move on to the real problems in this country."

Phelps Suspended!

Olympic Gold medalist Michael Phelps' really bad week just got a fucload worse!

The pot-smoking swimmer has just been suspended from competition for three months from USA Swimming.

On Thursday evening, USA Swimming released the following statement:

USA Swimming has reprimanded Michael Phelps under its Code of Conduct by withdrawing financial support and the eligibility to compete for a period of three months effective today, Feb. 5, 2009.

This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero.

Phelps has voluntarily accepted this reprimand and "has committed to earn back our trust."

Good luck with that, stoner!

The Fallout Has Begun!

Bong-hitter Michael Phelps has been dropped by a major sponsor in light of his pot-smoking controversy!

Cereal maker Kellogs says they are not renewing the swimmer's contract when it expires at the end of this month.

In a statement on Thursday night, they say:

"We originally built the relationship with Michael, as well as the other Olympic athletes, to support our association with the U.S. Olympic team. Michael's most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg. His contract expires at the end of February and we have made a decision not to extend his contract."

Thankfully for him, Phelps has a bunch of other advertisers - paying him tens of millions of dollars - who are all standing by him.

Will they for much longer?

Michael "Don't Look At The Face" Phelps continues to kowtow, telling reporters after swimming practice o Tuesday about the whole bog pic controversy that "It's obviously bad judgment and it's something I'm not proud of at all. I will say that with the mistakes that I've made in my life, I've learned from them. Every one of them. And I've become a better person. That's what I plan to do from here."

In his first interview since the bong picture surfaced, Phelps denied being a regular user and added, "This was stupid, and I know this won't happen again."

Good thinking, since the scandal has earned him some unwanted attention, from paparazzi parades to early morning pranksters with megaphones outside his bedroom window.

Now time to to get back to practice and go for the green gold!

It's back to the pool for Michael Phelps!

The Golden Boy was snapped at a Baltimore natatorium on Tuesday, his first appearance since his infamous bong photo surfaced in the tabloids.

Phelps has already made his apologies, but while his sponsors and even the Olympics are still down with him, a South Carolina law enforcement official is threatening to press charges.

Dude, take a hit!

Fellow Olympic swimmer Mark Spitz, whose gold medal record Phelps broke, said, "As strictly a fan, I feel badly for Michael and the situation he has put himself in. I think no one would wish this on anyone, especially the person that gave us a summer like no other in 2008."

Don't fuck up again, Phelps!

Now….

Time to lose that beer belly!

Olympics And (More Importantly) Sponsors Still Support Phelps

Filed under: Zportz > Michael Phelps

phelpsbong__opt1.jpg

So we all know that Michael "Don't-Look-At-The-Face" Phelps got caught smoking the Mary Jane. He has since said he was sorry for it.

And while there was some concern over the future of Phelps' endorsements and ability to compete in the 2012 Olympics, it looks like things will more or less be okay, even if his dignity is left a little bruised.

At least when it comes to Speedo and Omega.

Phelps sponsor Speedo released a statement saying, "In light of Michael Phelps' statement yesterday, Speedo would like to make it clear that it does not condone such behavior and we know that Michael truly regrets his actions. Michael Phelps is a valued member of the Speedo team and a great champion. We will do all that we can to support him and his family."

And the luxury Swiss watchmaker released a statement saying, "The current story in the press involves Michael Phelps' private life and is, as far as Omega is concerned, a nonissue."

As far as the Olympics are concerned, under World Anti-Doping Agency rules, Phelps is held to their standards only during competition. The International Olympic Committee said, "Michael Phelps is a great Olympic champion. He apologized for his inappropriate behavior. We have no reason to doubt his sincerity and his commitment to continue to act as a role model."

What Phelps really needs to do is reconsider who his friends (and his enemies) are!
