great apes threatened by poachers(1)

The illegal wildlife trade is literally a multibillion-dollar industry!

The same type of trafficking that's almost made tigers extinct is now threatening great apes!

Chimps, orangoutangs, gorillas and bonobos are all being plucked from their natural habitats and bought by private collectors or disreputable zoos.

The numbers are cray cray!

New Baby Orangutan Is REALLY Close To His Mom!

Aww!

A baby Sumatran Orangutan named Tripa is really attached to his mom!

In fact, since Tripa's birth, his mom Emma has not let him out of her sight!

And he was born all the way back on October 19.

The two spend their time together at the United Kingdom’s Chester Zoo.

Young Orangutans are the only other species, besides humans, whose childhoods can last up to eight years!

So it isn't any surprise to zookeepers that Tripa is by his mama's side.

After all, he depends on her for food, transportation, and love!

The three keys to any mammal's heart!!

The Sumatran Orangutan is an endangered species, so we're SUPER glad this baby is being carefully watched by his mama.

Take care of that cutie!

Apes Go Through Mid-Life Crises Too!

apes-have-mid-life-crisis-like-humans-web.jpg

Sometimes, life can get you down at the half way point….

Just ask humans….and apes too?!?!

Scientists have published a study stating that humans tend to be unhappiest in their 40's. This low point comes after a peak in the 20's, and before another peak in the 70's.

In the same study, zoos surveyed over 500 chimps and orangutans on happiness and shockingly, apes experience the same U-shaped happiness range.

It took TEN YEARS but the Taru Jurug Zoo will finally get the smoking orangutan off cigs.

Tori is 15 years old but she's been smoking for a decade. Tourists would throw lit cigarettes at her and watch in stupidity awe as Tori puffed away.

Orangutan Gets His Broken Leg Fixed

orangutarn-gets-broken-leg.jpg

Puyul the 40-year-old orangutan broke his leg when he fell out of a tree.

Conservationists found him and brought him to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Program (SOCP) and treated him.

He was put on fluids, x-rayed and even had a random air rifle pellet removed from his body.

Indonesia has lost about half of its rain forests in the last 50 years.

That means less trees and maybe that means less branches to grab and that would mean more falling monkeys.

So there's another reason to save the rain forests.

Can't wait til Puyul is up and running again!
