Maren Morris: It's 'Baffling' Why Country Music Is Full Of Nothing But White Men

Maren Morris

Shoutout to Maren Morris for telling it like it is!
The country crooner is the focal point of an interview in the brand new issue of People this week, and during the discussion, she weighed in on something that’s been heavy on her mind for some time: the lack of diversity in her genre!

Talking to the mag about how men — specifically white men — are dominating country music right now, the singer said:

“It’s baffling. There are tons of artists making incredible music, not just women — people of color and different sexualities are making catchy country music. I’m grateful my singles have done well, but it’s frustrating to continue to have these conversations and no results. Kelsea Ballerini and Carrie [Underwood], I think they’re in the Top 20 now, so that’s an improvement to a month ago when there was zero. But we need more. I’m hoping in this year we see more of a tide turn.”

Amen!!!
Morris is just the latest woman in country music to speak out; Miranda Lambert, Underwood, and Cam have all been vocal in the last few years about how hard it is to break into the biz as a woman right now.
And they’re all right!

Morris has cultivated many friendships with other female artists through her career, too — and it’s something she’s very proud of, for creating a sisterhood and being able to get through what can be a very unforgiving industry:

“It makes me feel like I’m not just dealing with it myself. I love those nights when we can just unplug and wear sweatpants, hang out, have tequila and laugh and cry.”

Awww!! Now that’s girl power!
And seriously… here’s hoping the country music world changes for the better in 2019 and diversifies a little bit…
