When it comes to natural disasters, a lack of preparation is the leading killer, second only to the disaster itself.

Most people don’t realize, but preparing for a natural disaster takes some very special consideration if you have a pet.

The American Society for the Protection of Animals estimates that more than 600,000 dogs and cats have been affected by natural disasters this year alone. And that’s not even factoring in hurricane Irene!

The ASPCA recommends owners create a specific pet emergency kit. It should contain things like water, pet food, bowls, collars and leashes, a pet first aid kit, copies of pet medical records and cleaning supplies.

Also, not every people shelter accepts pets, so owners should find a suitable nearby shelter for their ENTIRE family, pets and all.
