Phantom Sequel Love Never Dies To Close

Sadsies.

The sequel to Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s Phantom of the Opera will close on August 27.

Love Never Dies opened in London’s West End in March 2010 to some pretty poor reviews from critics. The show was then relaunched after some rewrites and a few tweaks, and was even nominated for seven Laurence Olivier theater awards, but unfortunately, it just never caught any momentum and bombed at the box office.

While the Melbourne, Australia version received a much more positive reaction, Lloyd Webber says that he blamed his battle with prostate cancer on why the show flopped in London.

Unable to give the show his full attention, he said, “With hindsight we should have said, ‘Let’s put the whole thing on hold until I’m 100 percent again’. Frankly I wasn’t feeling very well.”

It’s unfortunate to see another stage show close, but sources do say there is a possibility that the Melbourne version may be brought back to London.

Let’s hope so. The show deserves another chance.
