Although the San Francisco, California, Board of Supervisors approved the ban on McDonald’s Happy Meals with toys on Tuesday, the cities Mayor Gavin Newsom plans to veto the decision today.
He has set up an event at a local elementary school where he will release a report outlining the city’s efforts to combat childhood obesity, but ultimately, the board voted 8-3, which is a veto-proof margin, leaving the board the ability to override the veto.
Under the law, McDonald’s and other restaurants will have until December 2011 to improve their meals’ nutrition by adding fruits and vegetables — at least if they want to keep handing out future yard sale items for the quarter bin in their happy meals.
The food and beverages will have to contain fewer than 600 calories, and less than 35 percent of total calories will come from fat in an effort to fight childhood obesity.
That’s going to be tough considering their cheeseburger is 300 calories, with over a third coming from fat, but good luck with that McDonald’s!
