Pacific And Atlantic Whales Meet In The Middle

Whale

The Northernmost middle, that is.

Bowhead whales, of all the ‘great whales,’ are particularly suited to living in the harsh arctic environment.

They can go for months without food, because of their 2 foot thick layer of blubber, and use their bony heads to smash through ice.

And now that it’s the warm season, scientists for the first time have proof, via satellite, that Pacific and Atlantic born Bowheads have meet up in the same area, near the north pole, called the Northwest Passage.

One of the scientists studying the whales said:

“They’re capable of moving relatively long distances in a short period of time, and they can venture into areas where we haven’t seen them for a very long time – so I’m sure they will use the open water if the ice disappears.”

As the ice packs continue to melt, we should expect to see more co-mingling of the whales.

Let’s hope no East Coast/West Coast whale wars erupt! LOLz!
