A Florida woman was arrested Tuesday for child neglect after she refused to take her baby to a hospital or listen to doctor’s orders because it conflicted with her child’s vegan diet.
The incident began when Sarah Anne Markham took her baby to a pediatrician, where doctors told her that her child was dehydrated and needed to be taken to the hospital immediately.
However, the Department of Children and Families got a tip that she did NOT take her baby to the hospital after she left the office.
Sarah insisted that her child was fine and refused to give her the baby formula that was given to her by the pediatrician because it wasn’t vegan and instead went with a soy formula she bought at Whole Foods.
Police ordered her to take her baby to the hospital and she eventually agreed, however, she refused to let doctors give her child any formula that contained animal products. After lots and lots of arguing, she was later arrested for not cooperating.
We’re all for keeping your baby healthy, but this is a situation where the diet was CLEARLY having a negative affect on the child’s health.
If she could just get the child back to a healthy state and could find a way to compromise on the diet she wanted to continue with the little one on — so health problems wouldn’t be an issue — that would best!
It sucks to have to go against your beliefs, but sometimes it has to happen for the safety of your child! And DON’T ignore trained health professionals!
