There are several theories out there about how 7 Up got its name, but the one that seems to make the most sense is that it’s actually referring to the seven ingredients that make up the tasty beverage!
However, that just raises the even bigger question: what are these seven mystery ingredients??
Well apparently when the drink was first introduced to the masses way back in the day, it contained a super special element known as lithium!
Now this news might come as a bit of a surprise to some considering the drug is commonly used to treat bi-polar disorder and even schizophrenia!
What’s even more shocking is that 7 Up didn’t even try to hide this! In fact, they advertised the beverage as a “lithiated lemon soda” in order to make it seem healthier, as some believed lithium could help you lose weight!
In reality, the small dosage of lithium used in 7 Up was probably not enough to feel the “mind altering” effects the drug has become known for, but that didn’t stop the company from getting rid of the ingredient altogether!
Thank goodness for that!
