This should be an eye-opening documentary!
Ugly Betty star America Ferrera traveled to India to make a film for PBS about the prostitution epidemic in the country.
Based on the book Half the Sky by Nicholas D. Kristof, the actress visited the red-light district in Calcutta where she met with officials at local schools and charities who provide education and protection for women and children at risk.
Kristof, who accompanied Ferrera on the journey, praised the actress for her work on the documentary, saying:
“America (met) with a terrific 10-year-old girl who has studied English with the help of New Light and wants to be a doctor. Most of the girls in the area get little or no education and follow their mothers into prostitution. America was terrific to work with on the (TV network) Pbs version of Half the Sky.”
It’s so sad to hear about women and children who are forced to sell their bodies to survive, but we’re glad Mz. Ferrera has taken on such an important role and raising awareness through her work.
