You may not know the name Rachel Zegler yet, but she’s about to be everywhere — and unfortunately for her, she just got a taste of the bitter side of the fame monster.
Rachel is an 18-year-old singer-songwriter who has been showing off her talents on YouTube and social media for the past few months.
Early this year Steven Spielberg saw what her followers did and plucked her from Internet obscurity to play the lead role of Maria in the director’s highly anticipated remake of West Side Story. (And unlike Natalie Wood, she’s half-Colombian!)

Obviously one of the most important aspects of the urban retelling of Romeo And Juliet is the romantic chemistry between Maria and Tony.
Enter her male lead, Ansel Elgort.
Apparently they “found the fire” as she put it on social media. After the film wrapped way back on September 27, the starlet tweeted:
“There really aren’t enough words to describe the pride I have in Ansel‘s growth and beauty and literal magic he possesses on screen and off. Falling in love with him was easy. Happy wrap mi amor; catch ya on a fire escape sometime soon.”
Awww.
Perfectly innocent, right? Um, until Ansel gave his bizarre interview to The Sunday Times this week.
In case you didn’t see it (and we recommend you do!), the Baby Driver star creeps on the female interviewer, taking her photo even after she asks him to stop, and says he wants an “open” relationship with longtime girlfriend Violetta Komyshan in which he’s “free to fall in love with people.”
In that context, Rachel saying she fell “in love” with her costar suddenly didn’t look so innocent to his fans. They came out blaming her for his weirdness, even calling her a “homewrecker.”
Rachel seems to have gotten someone to go through and delete negative comments on her IG — they’ve been disappearing before our eyes.
She deleted the “offending” tweet, but eventually the bullying got to be so intense, the teen had to take a break from Twitter and Instagram altogether!
She tweeted (and also deleted) on Thursday:
“the fact that i have to say something is absolutely absurd. but the DMs and the name-calling and throwing around the word homewrecker over me expressing genuine love i have for my coworker is heartbreaking and i don’t want any part of it. so peace for now, i guess. be nice”
She did leave up a more succinct version, writing:
“the internet has made me upset so goodbye for a bit be nice to each other.”
So ridiculous!
Anything Ansel is doing to his relationship that you don’t like? THAT’S ON HIM!
Do not be blaming his teen costar and making her feel unsafe to be on social media, geez!
