Well, there is one cadre of people not happy Stephen Colbert‘s succession to The Late Show throne, and that’s the #CancelColbert movement and its leaders!
Technically, The Colbert Show and the character of Stephen Colbert will be cancelled and retired respectively, as many were quick to jokingly point out, including Michael Ian Black on Twitter:

After vowing in a since deleted tweet to keep silent on the matter of Colbert’s promotion, Suey Park and fellow activist Eunsong Kim had this to say in a Time Magazine op-ed:

“The cross-promotion of more white male celebrities prove it: The entertainment industry has perfected the development of white, cis, straight, male characters. The marginalization of ‘other voices’ ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ except when those ├óΓé¼┼ôothers├óΓé¼┬¥ are brought in only to aid in the cheap punch line of a joke ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ is complete. This is aggression that we do not have to accept. We will protest this until it ends.”

Well, in all fairness, the “cheap” joke in question was used to satirize the owner of the Redskins Dan Snyder├óΓé¼Γäós Native American charity, which is an example of real marginalization.
We hope that they can contextualize the satirical humor and joke that was being made via the character of Stephen Colbert.
As for us, we’re excited that this nice guy of comedy is getting this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
