Earlier, we listed all the ways that Cher was a badass and included one reason was the fact that she turned down an opportunity to be an ambassador and perform during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia!
We all know that the passion behind that was because of Russia’s backwards anti-gay laws, too! And now, know we know more about why she made her decision.
Here’s what she said about the decision to decline:
“It was hard. I have so many Russian friends. I have lots of Russian fans and I have so many people there that I love…So that was difficult. The Russian people that I know are great and don’t agree with [the anti-gay legislation]. They just don’t agree with it.”
Russia’s anti-gay legislation has moved past being something we all just disagree with… and right into being offensive and a huge blow to world equality! That’s why we’re super glad that Cher is taking a stand!
We couldn’t expect anything less from her, as she’s been a huge supporter of the LGBT community for a LONG time!
We know where her heart is!!
Like we said before, though — we know that not ALL Russians believe in or stand for these archaic laws! We are TRULY grateful for those people, like all the others in the world that just want happiness for humanity!
