The sequel Things I Can’t Explain: A Clarissa Book will pick up a few years after the show left off and reintroduce readers to an adult Clarissa.

PH: How far after the show’s end does Things I Can’t Explain begin?
MK: Clarissa is in her late twenties, Ferguson has “grown up” so the book takes place many years later. Now she’s more than just that snappy, lighthearted girl with an affinity for leggings, scarves and Doc Martens. She’s a woman, beautiful and smart as ever – just a little more soulful. And she’s struggling with all the things you struggle with post-graduation.
PH: Will Ferguson and Sam be in it?
MK: Of course! Ferguson is… well, he’s wild! He’s been in a bit of trouble and he’s physically changed but still Ferguson. By the end of the book, though, he may be something more than just plain old Ferguson – he may be headed for a life of international undercover intrigue – Bourne Identity-style – in a Ferguson sort of way.
Sam is central to the book – you finally get the answer to the question, “Can men and women be friends? I mean, can they really be just friends?” and also how Clarissa really felt about that “kiss of death” back when they were kids.
PH: Have you considered doing a sequel TV series like Girl Meets World? Or maybe a one-off special?
MK: Certainly. There is a lot of interest in reboots these days. But I think it would be interesting to see a 26-year-old Clarissa in action – the way she is in this book. It could be an amazing role for someone.
PH: Why didn’t Clarissa’s pet alligator Elvis last on the show? Was a reptile difficult to work with? Diva behavior?
MK: Oh, Elvis! Between his manager and his agent and his press agent and his lawyer and the croc wrangler, it was more than we could handle. The last time I heard from him, he was living large in the Everglades, planning a comeback and in a way I think he has. That said, everything about Elvis is explained in Things I Can’t Explain and Elvis definitely has a new “incarnation.”
