Perez Reviews: Blue Wizard / Black Wizard

We should not have liked Dave Malloy‘s new musical, Blue Wizard/Black Wizard, but despite it not being our usual cup of tea, we couldn’t help but be enamored by its charm, weirdness and awesomeness.
The man behind the brilliant music from Nastasha, Pierre And The Great Comet Of 1812, Dave Malloy’s new show is the closest thing we’ve ever seen to a stoner musical!
LOTS of weed-smoking must have been consumed while conceiving and creating this show! And that’s not a bad thing! We felt high just being there!
Wizards! Existential crisis! Donuts! Wonton food and wonton thoughts! So much to love about this show, which played it’s final performance Sunday night at the Incubator Arts project, way off-Broadway and downtown and IN A CHURCH!
There was so much about this all that was surreal – blissfully surreal!
Malloy appeared in the show himself and now having seen two VERY DIFFERENT shows of his, we are instantly hooked on him and can’t wait to see what he does next!
He is going to be a needed anti-hero of contemporary American musical theater!
