DC Plane Crash: Man Who Lost Family Even Makes CNN Anchor Sob With His Heartbreaking Story

DC Plane Crash Andy Beyer Lost Family CNN Kaitlan Collins Crying Video

Hearts around the nation are heavy after the devastating DC plane crash… Even news reporters can’t keep from shedding tears.

On Monday’s episode of CNN’s The Source, anchor Kaitlan Collins interviewed a man whose family was killed on American Airlines flight 5342, the plane which tragically collided with a Army Black Hawk helicopter last week.

Andy Beyer lost his wife Justyna, 42, and daughter Brielle, 12, when he was so close to seeing them again. The grieving father expressed his grief, saying:

“It’s been so hard. It feels unreal. I go through these moments of extreme sadness and tears, and then I flat and numb, and then I feel guilty that I’m not just crying all the time, but it’s just been hard. Really hard.”

The flight was on its way to the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, where Andy was waiting. He recalled going to pick up Justyna and Brielle from the DC airport with his son, and that they were “texting with them right before they were supposed to land.” He explained the flight tracker then read “landed,” but his iMessage texts went from blue to green — which usually indicates an iPhone is turned off or no longer active. He continued:

“Then firetrucks started going by. At that point I knew something was wrong.”

At that point, he said he and his son knew “before anything was really official” and broke down together in the car.

How devastating.

Through tears, he called it “the most amazing gift” to be Brielle’s dad — because all he ever wanted since he was a little kid was “a family to love.” He added:

“We were living our dream and she was the dream girl you could ask for. My son is a dream son too, and she was just the dream girl from the moment I met her.”

That’s SO heartbreaking.

On top of her beautiful personality and figure skating accomplishments, the little girl had overcome the cancer she was diagnosed with at just four months old. He lamented:

“So for this to happen after, we just didn’t think anything so bad could ever happen again.”

As for why he decided to come forward and speak about the tragedy, Andy explained:

“Everyone dies and they live on through our memories, and I want people to have a memory of them so they live on. So that’s why I wanted to share their story.”

At that point, Kaitlan became overwhelmed with emotions and could no longer fight back her own tears, which she tried to wipe away. She told him:

“I think everyone will be really touched to hear from you. Thank you.”
