The hantavirus disease is spreading… and it’s reached its first patient who was NOT on that disastrous cruise! You read that right!
According to The Sun on Wednesday, a French national has fallen ill with hantavirus after taking a flight with an infected passenger from the cruise ship, MV Hondius. This marks the first case of this disease in a patient who wasn’t on the expedition vessel!

So much for this transferring human-to-human only between patients with close contact, like spouses…
It comes as there are eight other cases of suspected hantavirus, five of which have reportedly been confirmed through lab testing. Three people have already died of the disease. One cruise traveler who had disembarked in April was contacted about the outbreak and took himself to a Zurich hospital in Switzerland, where it was confirmed he has the virus. His wife, who was aboard the ship with him, doesn’t have symptoms yet but is isolating. Others have been taken to hospitals for treatment while the ship remains stranded at sea awaiting permission to dock somewhere.
The World Health Organization and the ship’s operator Oceanwide Expeditions have not yet commented on or confirmed this reported development, so take this information with a grain of salt until then.
