Are Macrobiotic Diets Healthy?!

Are Macrobiotic Diets Healthy?!

gwyneth paltrow on macrobiotic diet

As Gwyneth Paltrow revealed the she suffered from osteopenia, a weakening of the bone which is rare for someone so young, is caused by a lack of vitamin D. Many believe the deficiency can be linked to her restrictive macrobiotic diet.

The diet is based on the Eastern philosophy of balancing yin and yang, where unprocessed, wholesome, natural and primarily plant-based ingredients are consumed. A typical macrobiotic diet consists of 50 to 60 percent whole grains, 20 to 25 percent organic and local fruits and vegetables, 5 percent sea vegetables, and 5 to 10 percent soup. Dairy, meat and unrefined sugars are restricted, along with tomatoes, potatoes, spinach, beets, zucchini, avocado, eggplant, peppers and asparagus.

People swear that the regimen may protect against diseases, including cancer, along with improving spiritual and physical wellness. Although, it tends to be low in vitamins D and B12, iron, protein and calcium. And strict devotees frown upon nutritional supplements!

The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends 400 to 800 international units per day of vitamin D for women and men under age 50. It is necessary in order for the body to absorb calcium and other nutrients essential for bone health. When D is too low, bones may become thin, brittle and malformed.

As long as the diet is balanced and daily nutritional needs are being met, a macrobiotic diet can be part of a pretty healthy lifestyle.
