It may seem like no big deal now, but when Ellen DeGeneres — and her TV character Ellen Morgan — came out 20 years ago, it was huge news.
On Friday’s ep of her talk show, Ellen celebrated the anniversary of The Puppy Episode, as it was named to keep its content a secret, the first time a primetime sitcom character had ever come out of the closet.

And of course it was simultaneous with Ellen herself, a comedian with a successful show and standup career, bravely paving the way for so many others.
