Emily Giffin probably didn’t expect the amount of backlash she’d receive after bashing Meghan Markle on social media, but here she is now… backtracking.
The Something Borrowed author took to her Instagram account, which she made private, mere hours later on Wednesday to apologize for the “negative impact” of her “mean-spirited” words. Calling someone “unmaternal” and “phony” for simply sharing a sweet video of mother and son to celebrate the little one’s first birthday definitely went way too far.

While defending herself against claims of racism, Giffin explained how she originally called herself one of Meghan’s fans, but things have since changed. The 48-year-old novelist started her apology, writing:
“I enjoy following celebrities and analyzing them with my readers. I post dozens of IG stories a day in a very honest, unfiltered way, as if I’m confiding directly with close friends. Further, I’m very interested in the British monarchy. I always have been. See the link in my bio for an essay I wrote in the days before Meghan and Harry wed.”
She continued, revealing she not only takes issue with the Duchess of Sussex but her husband Prince Harry, too:
“To be clear, I absolutely loved that a biracial, American woman was marrying into the Royal Family. It seemed a wonderful, happy thing for everyone. I celebrated their wedding by hosting a gathering here at my home and posting many, many photos. Further, I was appalled by any signs of racism against her. Over recent months my feelings about BOTH Harry and Meghan changed. But I can say from the bottom of my heart that my criticism of Meghan has never had anything to do with her race.”
To conclude, Emily addressed how she can understand how her harsh words wouldn’t have been taken lightly:
“Further, I understood why she wanted to leave the monarchy and carve out her own path. I do, however, find fault with the way BOTH she and Harry handled things, and those feelings bled over in later posts, including the ones today. I can see how some of my posts may have felt mean-spirited, and could be construed as having racial undertones. It was not my intent, but I understand that intent and impact are two very different things. And I am truly sorry for that negative impact.”
If you missed her anti-Meghan take, she captioned one photo of the Suits actress and Archie on her Instagram Stories with:
“Happy birthday, Archie. Go away, Megan [sic].”
The bestselling author even slammed the Los Angeles resident on an “unbiased” Markle account on IG, writing in one of the comments:
“Adorable child and book. But …. Holy ‘me first.’ This is the Megan show. Why didn’t she film and let Harry read? And why didn’t she take the moment at the end to say ‘he said daddy!’ Because that would make it about Harry for a split second, God forbid… also, you want privacy for your child so you put out a video (by your authorized biographer) of him …. wearing no pants?! Ooookay….”
Not a good look!!
Even so, it does seem like Giffin was a fan of Markle’s at one point, like she mentioned, as a blurb in her biography timeline featured on her site mentions the “happier news” of the Suits actress’ engagement to Prince Harry in 2017:
“Prince Harry’s engagement to Meghan Markle brings happier news, and Emily proceeds to spend the next several months obsessing over anything and everything involving the new royal couple.”
Guess them stepping down from their royal duties really hit her the wrong way, but to get so worked up to the point you’re bullying?? It’s about time she was called out for the behavior!!
Should we expect to see her timeline get updated with this very public moment? LOLz!
