As the trial of the decade (at least for the midwest) approaches, we’re learning more and more about the heinous murders of four University of Idaho students in November 2022.
That night, police reports tell us, a man with a knife entered the off-campus housing of several girls, and brutally murdered three — Maddie Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, and Xana Kernodle, as well as Xana’s boyfriend Ethan Chapin. Maddie and Kaylee were sleeping together in one room, Xana and Ethan in another. But there were two other roommates in the house that night.
Early on, police said Dylan Mortensen and Bethany Funke slept through the attacks, a claim which became increasingly dubious when we learned how much the victims fought back.
When criminology student Bryan Kohberger was arrested, the Moscow Police Department‘s probable cause affidavit revealed it wasn’t true. Dylan was awake — and apparently even saw the killer approaching her.

But Kaylee’s father Steve Goncalves dug deeper in his own investigation. His source from the grand jury told him both roommates — Dylan and Bethany — stayed up texting one another!
Now, thanks to newly released court documents obtained by Fox News, we know what they were saying to one another. It was all about what was happening outside their rooms! The docs, which the prosecution filed to show the evidence they plan to present at trial, tell a real horror story…
‘I’m freaking out’
After Dylan saw a masked man and ducked into her room, she apparently called Maddie, Kaylee, and Xana around 4:19 a.m…. and got no response. So she texted Bethany at 4:22:
“No one is answering. I’m rlly confused rn.”
She also texted Goncalves, asking:
“Kaylee … what’s going on.”
No answer… as she was already dead. But Funke messaged back:
“Ya dude wtf … Xana was wearing all black.”
Um… what? Did she see the killer and think it was their roommate? What?? Dylan is also recorded as having texted:
“I’m freaking out rn”
Oh man! She also tried to describe the man she saw to her roommate:
“No it’s like a ski mask almost.”
Bethany responded in disbelief for Dylan to “Stfu … actually.” She responded, her texts getting less coherent:
“Like he had sometbinf over is for head and little nd mouth … I’m not kidding o am so freaked out.”
She must have been shaking! They were clearly terrified whatever was going on wasn’t done. They may not have known for certain what it was… but they knew to fear for their lives. Dylan then realized her phone was about to die. Bethany told her friend:
“come to my room… Run. Down here.”
Dylan first tried calling Xana’s boyfriend Ethan this time — at 4:24, per the records. Again, no answer. She must have thought she’d have to get past the scary guy to get to her BFF’s room because she lamented:
“Im scRwd tho.”
Bethany responded:
“Ya IK but it’s better than being alone.”
Per the report, Dylan did run to Bethany’s room and spent the night. We guess they finally fell asleep?
The Next Morning
There’s been a lot of questions surrounding what happened over those next few hours. Why not call the cops RIGHT THEN?? They called each other. They texted. They didn’t call 911 until the next morning, around noon. Why??
Apparently they were terrified beyond reason. Dylan was too scared to even check on her roommates the next morning, apparently. The next texts the report lists are around 10:34 when she texted Maddie and Kaylee, “R u up??” She pleaded with Kaylee:
“Pls answer”
When someone finally did call 911, it seems to have been a friend they got to come over. After they finally found Xana, someone realized what needed to be done. The unidentified person said:
“One of our, one of the roommates who’s passed out and she was drunk last night and she’s not waking up… They saw some man in their house last night. Is she passed out? She’s passed out. What’s wrong?”
Someone then says on the call that she’s not breathing. Finally they must have realized what was happening, that she had been stabbed. Someone utters the words:
“I think we have a homicide.”
Oof. Just some kids in way over their heads, totally unprepared for this. But who could be prepared for such a thing??
