How Jessica Chastain Handled Being Slapped By Her Mother's Boyfriend As A Child: 'I Just Kicked Him In The Genitals'

Being bullied by someone more powerful than you? Kick ‘em in the gonads!
That’s what worked for Jessica Chastain when she was a young child getting abused by her mother’s then-boyfriend.
Covering WSJ magazine’s Talents and Legends February issue, the Molly’s Game star recalled having to physically stand up for herself as a young girl.

After revealing that she grew up with a single mom and still does not know who her biological father is, the 40-year-old shared a “turning point” in her life where she realized just how weak bullies are.
Detailing a physical encounter she had with her mother’s boyfriend at the time, she remembered:

“He did something — my room was messy or whatever and he had taken my clothes, and I was telling him to give me back my stuff — and he slapped me. And I just kicked him in the genitals, and he fell to the ground immediately. It was me, my sister and my brother — and I remember looking at my sister’s face, and we were both like, ├óΓé¼╦£Oh, my God, what did I just do?’ And then I ran out of the house.”

Hell yeah!

While she may have feared retaliation at the time, the future movie star soon learned that she had nothing to be afraid of. She added:

“I always look back on that moment as knowing that, ‘OK, if anything happens to me, I’m capable of fighting back.’ He never messed with me again.”

Reflecting on how her experience can help others being mistreated, the actress advised:

“If you allow a bully to intimidate or victimize you, they’ll continue to do it. Bullies are actually weak; they don’t go after strong people.”

Interestingly enough, Chastain remembered when Harvey Weinstein — the biggest bully in Hollywood — admitted he didn’t even want to go toe-to-toe with the actress at the premiere of The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. She recalled:

“He actually told the audience, ├óΓé¼╦£If I had to get in a boxing ring with Muhammad Ali or Jessica Chastain, I would choose Muhammad Ali.'”
