Kaitlynn Carter & Brody Jenner Explain Why They Never Legally Wed, Clarify Open Marriage Rumors

Brody Jenner and Kaitlynn Carter have finally cleared the air!

On the season finale of The Hills: New Beginnings Monday, the couple addressed concerns about their rumored open marriage and confirmed suspicions the duo’s union was never legally binding. B and K’s admission comes after weeks of gossiping amongst cast members and inner circle, and we can honestly say we’re not surprised!

As you know, the show’s timeline is a bit behind real life; Brody is currently dating model Josie Canseco and Kaitlynn has since moved on from their split with Miley Cyrus. ICYMI, the gals are reportedly living together now, too!

But on yesterday’s episode, the pair’s former relationship took center stage as the cast came together in Santa Barbara for Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt‘s vow renewal.

Ashley Wahler repeatedly grilled Carter and questioned her desire to have children because she believed Jenner was sleeping around with other women. Speaking in her own defense, Kaitlynn said:

“That’s offensive, to say that we shouldn’t be parents because of some random rumor about my relationship with Brody. The last thing I need is someone weighing in on our relationship. I just think it’s so inappropriate.”

In a later conversation, Wahler boldly asked if Brody had sex with other women. To which, Carter replied:

“Not without me being involved, okay? Everything with me and Brody is under my control, let’s put it that way.”

The 31-year-old continued to explain herself in an on-camera confessional, adding:

“There’s not one part of our relationship that I’m ashamed of or that I would do differently. I just think that the world isn’t necessarily ready to hear about all that. Not everybody is so open-minded or accepting of other people. But as long as what we’re doing is working for us, that’s the most important thing.”

Okay. So, those rumors about getting down and dirty with other people were true!

So, what about that beautiful ceremony in Indonesia last June where the two exchanged vows? Was it the real deal, or what?

According to the reality starlet, their love was made official — just not on paper! She explained how finances, timing, and their busy personal schedules got in the way of making the marriage legal:

“Right before we went to Indonesia to get married, we started talking about getting our license here in the States, but we had a lot of like financial things that we needed to work out. We realized like, you know, we just want to focus on being excited about Indonesia and our wedding there, so let’s just deal with it when we get back. But we haven’t gotten around to it yet.”

Brody doubled down on his ex’s explanation in a separate chat with Spencer, who also questioned the optics of his buddy’s nuptials. He said:

“We met with attorneys and s**t like that two weeks before we left for Indonesia, went and got married in Indonesia, and every since then we’ve both been incredibly busy. We just haven’t gotten around to going to do it in the whole courthouse or however we’re going to decide to get legally married. Like I said, whether you put it on a piece of paper or have just a celebration in Indonesia, we’re married and she’s my wife and I love her to death. … We’ve just got to get some things sorted out.”

While expressing confidence in his own lifestyle, he added:

“Ultimately I’m extremely happy with my relationship and my wife, and she gives me tons of freedom to be able to do whatever I want. I have nothing to complain about. Life is great.”

Hm. Things didn’t quite get sorted out did they, Brody? The real tea about their wedding came out when he and Kaitlynn announced they’d amicably parted way back in August after 14 months together.

Also, we find it a little hard to believe these two didn’t have the time to hit up a courthouse and sign their names on the dotted line. If you can make time to plan a wedding across the world, shouldn’t you also find time to prioritize sealing the deal when you get back?? It just doesn’t make sense!

However, this all didn’t come as a surprise to sources who spoke to People after Brody and Kaitlynn ended things. One insider claimed they were never on the same page about what they wanted in life. At the time, the confidant dished:

“Brody and Kaitlynn have had issues for years. It is no secret amongst those who knew them. And the show was not good for them. It got so bad that Kaitlynn had actually moved out before they started filming, but then moved back in. Doing The Hills magnified a lot of things in their marriage. And it became clear that it wasn’t going to work. They both knew it.”
