King Charles Makes Historic Speech To Congress

King Charles III just gave a historic speech to Congress!

His Majesty and Queen Camilla made a quick trip to Washington D.C. on Tuesday, where they were honored with a state dinner by President Donald Trump. The whole visit is part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of America’s independence. Becoming the first monarch to address Congress since his mother Queen Elizabeth II did so in 1991, the 77-year-old delivered a half-hour speech in which he praised the “special” relationship the US has forged with the United Kingdom, calling it a “story of reconciliation, renewal and remarkable partnership” born out of “bitter divisions of 250 years ago.”

Before getting too deep in the speech, the King acknowledged the scary circumstances of Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, saying:

“We meet, too, in the aftermath of the incident not far from this great building that sought to harm the leadership of your nation and to foment wider fear and discord. Let me say with unshakeable resolve: such acts of violence will never succeed. Whatever our differences, whatever disagreements we may have, we stand united in our commitment to uphold democracy, to protect all our people from harm, and to salute the courage of those who daily risk their lives in the service of our countries.”

For the most part, the whole speech was a very glowing remark about all the ways the US and Britain have supported each other over the years and continue to do so in challenging times. That said, Prince William and Prince Harry’s father didn’t totally support Trump! The two countries have been at odds amid Trump’s Iran War, among other things, and while Charles didn’t mention it directly, he did reference the fact that “we meet in times of great uncertainty; in times of conflict from Europe to the Middle East which pose immense challenges for the international community.” He stressed that the countries “common democratic, legal, and social traditions” have allowed them to always find a way to “come together,” sharing:

“And by Jove, Mr. Speaker, when we have found that way to agree, what great change is brought about — not just for the benefit of our peoples, but of all peoples. This, I believe, is the special ingredient in our relationship. As President Trump himself observed during his state visit to Britain last autumn, ‘The bond of kinship and identity between America and the United Kingdom is priceless and eternal. It is irreplaceable and unbreakable.’”

Charles also called out the Magna Carta, a 1215 document that declared even a king isn’t above the law. Trump may not be a real king, but he loves to call himself one, so that’s definitely a pointed dig! Just look at what the official White House X (Twitter) account tweeted on Tuesday, calling Trump a King (below):

Trump supporters say it’s “just a troll,” but how unAmerican! Literally! It’s literally why the founding fathers left England. No kings!

Later in the speech, while Charles didn’t directly address Jeffrey Epstein — an issue that has plagued both the royal family and the first family — he did mention “victims” of societal “ills”:

“Distinguished members of the 119th Congress, it is here in these very halls that this spirit of liberty and the promise of America’s founders is present in every session and every vote cast. Not by the will of one, but by the deliberation of many, representing the living mosaic of the United States. In both of our countries, it is the very fact of our vibrant, diverse and free societies that gives us our collective strength, including to support victims of some of the ills that, so tragically, exist in both our societies today.”

Interestingly, Rep. Ro Khanna, hosted a roundtable with Epstein survivors, advocates, and lawmakers earlier in the day, which Charles declined to attend, despite his brother Andrew Mountbatten Windsor‘s controversial ties to the convicted sex offender.
