How…is…this…even…possible??
A man is facing fines to the tune of $70,000 after illegally smuggling 40,000 piranhas into New York!
A 66-year-old man, a tropical fish salesman by trade, brought 39,548 piranhas in from Hong Kong between 2011 and 2012 by having his supplier declare the fish to be silver tetras.
The man has plead guilty to the charges and will probably have to pay out the (non-piranha infested) butt to avoid jail time.
His attorney said:
“He made a minor error in judgment, and he’s paying for it.”
Minor error in judgment? HAS HE EVEN SEEN Piranha 3DD?!? He’ll really reallllly be hating paying too because he sold the fish for only $1 per piranha!
Piranhas are illegal in 25 states, including NY as of 2011, because they EAT FLESH!
Thankfully, several of the fish were recovered. About 850 of them.
Whew! That was close! 850 down, only 38,698 to go!!
The moral of this story? If you’re gonna sell illegal fish in NY, maybe do it for more than a buck a pop. Just sayin’.
