Doesn’t sound very professional to us!
Disappointed theatergoers were very upset over Matthew Broderick‘s shoddy performance in The Starry Messenger. The actor had to ask for his line 10 times — and that was just in the first act!
Broderick is known for studying his scripts later on, but he may want to change his methods after hearing some of the harsh criticism from audience members:
“Broderick should be fined for this sort of thing. The theater, the producers, [director] Kenneth Lonergan and Broderick should be ashamed to have let an audience in for this.”
“For God’s sake, they are charging good money for this, and it is indeed unconscionable to use these as rehearsals. I only hope they do cancel this week of performances because I, too, have a ticket, and I don’t want to endure this either.”
“It was an overall mess. He kept apologizing under his breath after he forgot a line, and everyone in the audience started to feel awkward.”
Ouch!
Broderick’s last performance in The Philanthropist from earlier in the year didn’t go over well with theater critics either. Some are saying people might be too harsh on the actor as it was a preview performance for The Starry Messenger. We tend to disagree.
Preview or not, people are PAYING to see you perform! Get it together and do your job!
