It’s been nearly eight full years since legendary now-former Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter first met Meghan Markle, but it sounds like he’s STILL completely shocked that she’s gotten to where she is today!
As you may recall, the Duchess of Sussex was first offered a place on the VF cover for the mag’s October 2017 issue. But now, amid a ton of news coming out relentlessly amid the 43-year-old’s latest Netflix dreams and new podcast push, Graydon is speaking out! Yes, he’s blabbing nearly a decade after deciding to grant that cover shoot to Prince Harry‘s wife. And he’s pretty negative about his experience with her, too!!

Speaking to Page Six on Sunday, the editorial icon who helmed the influential fashion mag for 25 years and created the iconic VF Oscars after party, to boot, said the Suits alum is “adrift” on reality.
Ouch!!
Thinking back to 2017 when he was first approached regarding that October’s cover shoot, Carter recalled how he had absolutely no idea who Meghan was prior to being tipped off:
“Jane Sarkin, who booked our covers, came in and said: ‘We should do a cover on Meghan Markle.’ I said, ‘I have no idea who that is.’ She said: ‘She’s on Suits.’ I said: ‘I have no idea what that is, why should we do a story on her?’ So she said: ‘Because she’s going to marry Prince Harry.'”
The angle of the story was going to be about Prince Harry, and Meghan’s fairytale love story with the royal. Duh!! Obviously that was the only reason they did a whole cover on the fifth lead of a USA Network show.

But during the interview, Carter says Meghan was frustrated that the mag’s focus wasn’t elsewhere. She reportedly said this to the interviewer at one point:
“Excuse me, is this going to all be about Prince Harry? Because I thought we were going to be talking about my charities and my philanthropy.”
Remember, this is back in 2017, when Markle was still very new on the scene and a relative unknown taking on a totally fresh relationship with the prince. Heck, the VF issue ended up coming out just a few months before the pair’s engagement was even publicly announced!
So of COURSE the whole world wanted to know about her and Harry — and about who she was, but… you know, who she was as a person, not her “philanthropy.” Meg might feel differently, but just sayin’!

Recalling that awkward moment, Carter told the outlet his take on the actress then and now:
“This woman is slightly adrift on the facts and reality.”
Yikes…
Carter also spoke to the news outlet on Sunday about his opinions regarding the entire context of Harry’s estrangement from his brother, Prince William, and the rest of the royal family. Carter — who knew Harry’s late mother Princess Diana quite well prior to her death — said:
“Anytime someone comes between siblings that’s a disaster — horrible for a family.”
The former magazine editor continued:
“I would think [Diana] would feel great sorrow for her son to have been pulled away from his family like this, especially his brother but also his father.”
Damn. We can definitely understand that POV. Oh, and this would all seem to be yet another recent instance in which Vanity Fair-adjacent folks don’t exactly see eye to eye with the Montecito momma! Womp, womp…
Carter is speaking out about all this right now, BTW, because he is promoting his new memoir When the Going Was Good: An Editor’s Adventures During the Last Golden Age of Magazines. That book hits store shelves on Tuesday in the US, and then it’ll be out in the UK on Thursday.
Sounds like a book we’ll want to read — for all the stories, including whatever Meghan content might pop up in there!
What about U, Perezcious readers??
