Fans Slam Met Gala, Say It’s ALREADY Walking Fine With ‘Appropriation Disaster’ Theme For 2025!

The 2025 Met Gala already has people very nervous!!!

The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the Costume Institute’s exhibition next year will be Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, inspired by Monica L. Miller’s 2009 book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. According to Vogue, the exhibit will include garments, paintings, photographs, and more “exploring the indelible style of Black men in the context of dandyism, from the 18th-century through present day.” Wow!

The co-chairs of the massive fashion event are Colman Domingo, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, Anna Wintour, and Lewis Hamilton. LeBron James will serve as the honorary chair. This is the basketball legend’s first Met Gala, too! So exciting! Check out the theme announcement from Vogue’s Instagram (below):

The official dress code was not announced. We won’t find out until early 2025. But since the theme reveal, there have been a lot of reactions online. Plenty of people are super excited to see how the celebs — specifically, Zendaya, Janelle Monae, and  Rihanna — show up to the gala and even feel the theme was long “overdue!” See those reactions (below):

“Now THIS is a theme we deserve to see. How exciting. Zendaya finna eat this one up”

“I know a theme like this hates to see Janelle Monae coming.”

“Black style through history has had an immeasurable influence on global fashion identity and commercialism. This Met Gala theme is wildly overdue.”

‘This is brilliant. This is classic. This is history.”

“Can’t wait to see how people take on this theme!”

“BEST THEME IN MET HISTORY.”

“Ohhhhh they finna SHOW OUT! Rihanna and Zendaya are going to SLAYYYY”

“This is going to be sooo good. Wow!”

Others, on the other hand? They are understandably worried, with many pointing out that this is an “appropriation disaster” waiting to happen. People are also worried about whether black designers and stylists will be represented at the Met Gala next year:

“Am I the only nervous about this?”

“A good theme but let’s hope no one will appropriate cultures.”

“Sounds like a recipe for appropriation disaster…Stylists study up!”

“Love the theme however I wonder if they will use Black (American, African, UK) designers this year, so many have been looked over.”

“It’s TIME BLACK CREATIVES are honored for their contributions to the fashion industry, hope the invite list reflects the theme.’”

“Plenty of time to do this theme right, I wonder how the other ethnicities will style this and not be culturally appropriating or disrespectful/stereotypical.”

“I hope many black designers secure a table next year and show out!”

“I hope this means more black designers will be able to have their work grace the gala’s carpet.”

“Kudos… now let’s just pray no one shows up in Black face.”

It is 2024. We really hope celebs know better and no one would even think about attending in Black face…
