Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich just purchased a Jean Michel-Basquiat painting at an auction in New York City to the tune of $14 million, easily outdoing the $12 million it was estimated to sell for.
The piece is called Untitled (Boxer), 1982, and depicts an abstracted black heavyweight fighting with arms outstretched against a white graffiti background.
The painting was the center of a 2005 traveling retrospective of the artist’s work. Basquiat died in 1988 of a drug overdose at the age of 27 – only 6 years after the particular piece was created.
Lars is a big art collector.
And he’s also really rich!!!!
Update: Lars actually was the one selling the painting. Either way, he’s still an art collector and filthy rich!
