Netflix Romance Hit Nobody Wants This Is Based On A True Story! Awww!

If you like Nobody Wants This, this story will make it 10x better!

The hit new Netflix show starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody isn’t just a great love story, but one that’s based on true events! If you don’t know the premise, Kristen plays an agnostic podcast host who in a turn of events ends up striking up a romance with a rabbi, played by Brody. See the trailer (below):

Love their characters? Well, they’re based on show creator Erin Foster and her entertainment exec husband Simon Tikhman, whom she met IRL in her 30s!

During an interview with Today published on Monday, Erin opened up about drawing on her own experiences while crafting the romantic comedy:

“It’s not always like tangible things I can point to. The emotional journey, I would say, is very accurate to my experience of meeting my husband.”

She recalled feeling “set in her ways” when she met her now-husband, who actively practices Judaism. And while he may not be an actual rabbi, the general theme of opposites attracting presented in the show was definitely there. She remembers thinking:

“‘This is my worldview. No one’s going to be able to change it. These are my habits. They are what they are.’”

But she learned real quick that when you meet the one, you meet the one. No matter how different they may be:

“And then you meet someone who totally turns that upside down, who makes you want to be a better version of yourself, and who makes you question all the things that you thought were true.”

Erin eventually went on to convert to Judaism and marry Simon. And the two now share 4-month-old daughter Noa Mimi. Cute!

Elsewhere in the interview, Kristen spoke about how Erin was an “open book” when it came to sharing the experiences her character is based on:

“Erin talked to us a lot about her experiences. She is such an open book and offered up all of her history of meeting and dating her husband, and her thought process about converting and about their differences and their similarities.”

That authenticity definitely seems to come through in Kristen’s performance! But, you know, it is a show, so not ALL elements are based on true events and people. Namely, a lot of the supporting cast. Erin told the news org:

“I had a lot of anxiety around that, and I intentionally made the characters really different than the people are in real life because I didn’t want to get divorced. My husband is, like, really private. Being married to someone like me is his personal hell. Literally today, he was like, ‘Have a great day. Good luck with the interviews. Please don’t talk about me.’”

Ha! Kind of sounds like Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck’s dynamic… Let’s hope things work out better for Erin and Simon, though!

Erin also revealed that the character who plays her mom in the show really is based on her mom — but her in-laws? Not so much. She noted she has a “great relationship” with them, and that her goal wasn’t ever to recreate her own story beat for beat:

“I really want to show a romantic comedy that has a male lead who treats women nicely, and not in a way that makes him feel like he’s a pushover … [A] good guy [who could] also be the ‘crushable’ guy that you want to end up with.”

That’s so sweet!
