Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie are opening up about their bitter feud!
As Perezcious readers know, the reality stars were friends for a long time — going back to when they were in diapers! In 2003, they even starred in the hit show The Simple Life together. But then something happened two years later that caused their friendship to end. Paris first hinted at the feud in April 2005 when she told People that she wanted to replace Nicole with Rod Stewart’s daughter Kimberly on the series:
“Kim is hysterical and crazy fun, and I love that about her. Nicole and I have been best friends since we were babies, and I love her, but I want to do what’s best for the show.”

However, it was more than just trying to make the best television possible! They were NOT on great terms anymore! Days later, the Stars Are Blind singer said that “it’s no big secret Nicole and [her] are no longer friends,” adding:
“Nicole knows what she did, and that’s all I’m ever going to say about it.”
Whoa!
At the time, there were a lot of theories about what happened. Some sources claimed Nicole was jealous of Paris’ fame, while others claimed Lionel Richie’s daughter just outgrew the Paris in Love star. Whatever happened, it was bad because they were no longer speaking to each other by the end of 2005. In fact, they couldn’t even work on The Simple Life together anymore! They filmed Season 4 separately! Yeesh!
Fortunately, the two did not stay mad at each other forever! They eventually made amends and have reunited again for their new show, The Simple Life: Encore. While we are so glad to see Nicole and Paris together on our screens again, one question remains. What really caused their feud all those years ago? We finally have answers!
During an appearance on Call Her Daddy on Wednesday, the besties opened up about their falling out in the early aughts. When asked by host Alex Cooper how their friendship soured, Nicole pointed out that the reason would never “be good enough” for anyone because “nothing really happened.” Hmm. Instead, Paris blamed the media for pitting her and Nicole against each other back then when no drama actually existed between them:
“Back then, the media was just so toxic and they loved starting feuds between people because, obviously, that sold tabloids. So it was mostly the media just spinning things and creating drama that didn’t exist, which was normal in the 2000s. They did it with everyone.”
That can’t just be it, right? According to Nicole, no. The “toxic” media back then was a part of it, but their age at the time also didn’t help matters. The Candidly Nicole star explained they “didn’t know how to communicate with each other” when they were 23 and 24 years old, which often meant that “if [we were hearing something,” rather than talking it out, we would assume [it was true].” Oof. She added:
“We didn’t have the communication skills we have right now to have check-ins, which is so important.”
It is! Communication is so key with any relationship! Sadly, they lost more than a year of their friendship due to their lack of communication. Nicole expressed that it now makes her “sad to think about a time without [her] friend.” However, their feud also helped her learn a lot:
“I think it has really helped me [with] communicating at this stage in my life. And I think just with all relationships, it’s so important to have check-ins and to be honest and real and, you know, tender with the people that you love the most.”
Thankfully, the iconic duo found their way back to each other! Nicole and Paris agreed they only repaired their friendship because they had known each other since they were 2 years old, and their families were good friends. If it weren’t for those two factors, who knows if we would have gotten The Simple Life reunion today! Or worse, we may have never heard them sing “Sanasa” together again! Nicole continued:
“We were friends for a long time before anyone even knew because our families are friends, you know. And so, we’ve been friends our entire lives, so you know, and I don’t mean to belittle it at all, but when you’re talking about some fight, I watch it with other 20-year-olds that I know, and they’re going through a little thing and then they’re back. Going through a little thing, and then they’re back. Because ours was a part of a TV show, it just blew up to be something that was so big that it became impossible to connect to. It became something that was like otherworldly.”
